Onward to the 'Sweet 16'

Mesa Ridge 67, Golden 66 (OT)

Saturday, Senior Alex Brunow nailed the winning free throw that gave the Grizzlies a 67-66 overtime win and a ticket to the “Sweet 16,” where they will face top-seeded Broomfield at 7:15 p.m. Friday night at Broomfield High School.
In a tight game, the Grizzlies came back from a 50-46 deficit at the end of the third quarter to carry a 66-all tie into overtime.
Junior Jamal Dickerson tallied a double-double, netting 15 points and taking down 10 boards while long-ball specialist Thomas Vallejo led the team with 16 points, 15 coming on three-pointers.

Ftn.-Ft. Carson 58, Mountain View 49
The Trojans led for much of the game Saturday, staying a few steps ahead of visiting Mountain View for a 58-49 win.
Trojan Center Edd Anderson was monstrous in the paint, leading all scorers with 23 points.  Senior Jamaal Johnson added 15 in the win.
Fountain-Fort Carson will travel to Ralston Valley for their “Sweet 16” matchup Friday at 7 p.m.

Widefield 71, Skyline 55
Widefield cruised over Skyline Saturday for the 71-55 win, deviating from the usual reliance on the long ball and instead winning with high-percentage shots.
Dion Vaughn had a breakout game, leading all scorers with 18 points.
Widefield, the top seed in their region, will host 16-9 Fossil Ridge at Bowers’ Gym Friday at 5:15 p.m.  With a win, Widefield will again host the “Great 8” game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Girls’ seasons end

After each earned wins in opening round games Tuesday, the seasons of Widefield, Mesa Ridge and Fountain-Fort Carson ended Friday with losses.
Mesa Ridge lost 76-60 to Golden, Fountain-Fort Carson lost 69-55 to Fossil Ridge, and Widefield lost 82-51 to Silver Creek.
